David Pollock wants sustainability in the Daly Region
David Pollock is very concerned about the inaction of the NT Government to permanently protect the Daly River, or combat the spread of noxious weeds like gamba grass.
The Daly is like no other river. Having the highest dry season flow of any northern Australian river, the Daly has internationally important ecosystems and is extremely significant for Indigenous people, fishers and landholders. Overuse of the Daly River would result in another Murray Darling disaster and destroy any prospect of long-term, sustainable economic development.
Large scale land clearing is a known greenhouse gas contributor. All of the world’s governments now agree this must be reduced not increased!
Gamba grass is a disaster in the NT landscape. Its rapid, uncontrolled spread over time will lead to a landscape without trees. (Unlike native grasses it burns so hot that trees are killed). Currently the NT Government under Labor permits the sale and planting of this noxious weed while it is already banned in neighbouring Western Australia and Queensland.
Being a family man and a long term resident in the Territory, David wants to see our natural resources protected for social, economic and environmental prosperity now and in the future. David lives in Batchelor with his wife and two young boys. He trained and worked in biological sciences before becoming a secondary school teacher.
David is committed to a sustainable future for all Territorians.
David will take action to:
- Keep the Daly River flowing– limit new water use to sustainable levels
- Implement a Native Vegetation Act to prevent further major land clearing
- Ban the sale and planting of gamba grass in the NT (like in WA and Qld)
- Ensure sustainable design and planning principals are applied to new developments in the Daly Region
- Ensure better allocation of resources to rural and remote schools
