Greens support Angela-Pamela uranium opposition
Wednesday, 6 May 2009
The Australian Greens say community opposition to uranium mining in the
Northern territory is building, as Cameco gain official authorisation to
begin drilling at Angela-Pamela today.
"The Minister can expect strong resistance from the community at
Angela-Pamela and we in the Greens will be supporting them all the way.
We will continue to raise these issues with the Minister and continue
fighting for a uranium free future, in the parliament and the
community," said the Greens Spokesperson for Nuclear Issues, Senator
Scott Ludlam.
The company has been granted authorisation to begin drilling by the
Northern Territory Government, under the Mine Management Act. Federal
Resources Minister, Martin Ferguson has also given the green light to
the drilling.
"State and Territory Governments are still ignoring the will of the
people of the Northern Territory. It is a highly provocative challenge
to all those who have concerns about the impact of uranium mining. The
Government must recognise that uranium mining is not sustainable - it's
not clean or safe and it leaves a toxic legacy, destroying land and
communities," said the Greens Spokesperson for Nuclear Issues, Senator
Scott Ludlam.
