Say No to Alice Uranium Mine

The NT government has received an exploration application from Cameco/Paladin to explore for Uranium in the Angela/Pamela tenement area less than 21 Kms south of the Alice Springs CBD.

You can let the NT Government know that you oppose the exploration licence being granted by sending your comments to the Department.

The NT Greens are opposed to uranium exploration, mining and export and are opposed to this highly inappropriate development for the recently awarded Solar City Alice Springs. Contact us or visit one of our market stalls to get your NO ALICE U-MINE sticker, sign the petition opposing the exploration licence and support the campaign.

ALICE SPRINGS TOWN COUNCIL ELECTION RESULTS 2008

Alderman Jane Clark Alice Springs Town Council

Green to head up Environment Committee

Alice Springs Town Council has unanimously elected Greens Alderman Jane Clark to chair the newly formed Environment Advisory Committee.

Terms of Reference for the EAC are to provide advice and make formal recommendation on public policy in matters relating to the sustainable management of resources and the natural environment in the municipality of the Town of Alice Springs including:

  • Consider issues that relate to waste management relevant to Council functions.
  • Support Council with initiatives to minimise greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Contribute to the improved water usage measures of the town.
  • Ensure that Council's natural environment is protected and rehabilitated.
  • Assist with development of educational mediums to raise the awareness of sustainable resource management and environmental issues.
  • Other matters referred to it by Council.

Ald Clark said,"Local Governments across Australia are embracing the 'think globally, act locally' approach to sustainability and management of waste. I look forward to working on a range of issues, and to stimulating debate about ways to take action for the positive benefit of our local environment."

URANIUM MOTION NOT ALLOWED FOR DISCUSSION

"I was disappointed that, on the same night, Council voted not to discuss my motion supporting the May 7 public meeting recommendations opposing the grant of a Uranium exploration licence less than 21km from Alice Springs Council Chambers. Many residents are concerned about the impact on our health, lifestyle and tourism industry and Aldermen need to make their position clear on this issue."

ALICE SPRINGS RESULTS

MAYOR

For Mayor, Jane Clark polled 15.5% from 8 candidates on primaries, ahead of the President of the CLP's strongest branch and registering a 63% increase on the result across Alice in the recent Federal election.

Preference flows then saw Jane Clark climb to second for the two candidate preferred result for Mayor! The final official result was announced by the NT Electoral Office today - Ryan 6600 and Clark 3242; followed by Stewart, Koch, Campbell, Ociones, van Haaren and McIver.

Jane Clark said, "Like other candidates, I'm in a holding pattern awaiting Aldermanic recount results. The Mayoral result demonstrates that the community has got behind me and my platform, and is keen to support a Greens candidate who is upfront and honest about where they stand. I will continue to promote an intelligent compassionate approach to social issues whilst pushing for sustainable urban planning and kerbside recycling."

ALDERMAN

Alice Aldermanic results for the ASTC election held on 29 March 2008 were finally declared on Friday 11 April following a recount. The recount has seen Jane Clark resoundingly re-elected to ASTC as an Alderman with the second highest primary vote of all elected aldermen.

Lisa Hall (our second of three Greens candidates) missed out under the exhaustive preferential voting system by 150 odd votes but together the three candidates (including Lenny Aronsten) polled 15.5% of the vote.

Jane Clark will be sworn in as the first Greens alderman for Alice Springs Town Council at 5:15pm on Monday 14 April 2008 at the ASTC. Come along to see the inaugruation of our new alderman.

He says, “Combined, the Greens vote of Greg Jarvis, Emma Young and Simon Niblock was 29% in Chan Ward, with the Nightcliff booth producing an impressive 32% Green vote.”

He looks forward to working with new Mayor Graeme Sawyer who was elected on a pro-environment platform.
